It just doesn’t work. Without the gun, House of the Dead II becomes more of a chore than a fun experience. It’s not the worst thing in the world, and Sega has tried to make things better by allowing you to adjust the targeting cursor speed, but I’d personally avoid this game unless I were buying a gun peripheral along side it.

Fortunately, though, I’ve played through the Japanese version heavily, using the light gun, and I can pass on to you that Sega’s House of the Dead II is a worthwhile game, even with the added cost of the gun. The purchase is a nobrainer for those accustomed to the light-gun genre, and players who are normally turned off by the genre may find themselves having fun as well.
